• Question: Does becoming an engineer open up a lot of opurtiunities in your working life?

      Probably no more than in other types of work. The difference for me has been that I have tried to create opportunities (like dropping in to WHO in Geneva to meet the engineers). If you are interested in your work, you will naturally try to meet up with people who are also interested in their work – and this can sometimes lead to those opportunities which lead to the dream job.

      The lesson here ? You should create your own opportunities and not just wait for the opportunities to come looking for you – no matter what career you follow.

      I would say an engineering degree is pretty good. You can get employed with an engineering company which in itself can lead to a lot of different positions. And engineers often find it easy to get jobs elsewhere: management, finance, consulting, IT, teaching.

      Well I’ve met countless people through my work and had various different types of engineering jobs over the last 10 years. I’ve also been offered jobs with companies that I have worked with, but not taken them as I like the company I am with currently. So yes, there are opportunities for sure.
