I’d probably set up a training facility to teach people interested in disaster relief which would cover the engineering, the cultures likely to be encountered, a range of languages and so on which would focus on how to help third world countries help themselves in disasters. After all, I had three technical gurus who taught me everything I know about water and sanitation, and they were all Indians. We need to concentrate more on helping others to help themselves.

An interesting idea. I think in my current job if I got infinite funding I would radically change the River Thames. I would remove all the man-made things on the river, like locks and weirs, that create a very artificial situation. I would then remove all the other artificial things on the Thames like steel and concrete river banks and so on.

The end result of all this would be a river that is a job for all wildlife to live in. But of course this is actually probably impossible as the river as it is has many things depending on it beyond the wildlife – like supplying water for us to drink, letting boats travel on it and the effect is has on farmland.
