What I enjoyed most was probably the creation of the Tara Handpump because it was I who first saw the need, and I was able to see the idea right through till it was going out of the factories in large numbers. Those pumps were designed for (and partly by) the communities for whom they were intended.

Would I change anything ? Probably not because it seems to be exactly what those people needed. The fact that there are over 1 million of those pumps in the field in different countries around the world tells me that it probably doesn’t need too much changing.

Myself and a few other young engineers worked on a design of a mother vessel for the maintenance fleet of the wind turbine farms. The idea is that new wind farms will be far offshore, to maintain them you will have a number of small boats with technicians cruising around. The mother vessel will be able to deploy and pick up these small boats and provide accommodation, support and protection from the storm for the crews. It was a very early concept stage of design which made it so fun. Because nothing was set in stone yet and we could come up with all sorts of ideas, it really sparks your creativity.

The project I am most proud of is on the River Lambourn which is a river that is regarded as very valuable for its unique wildlife. I looked after a big project on the river to try and restore a section of it to a more natural state and so make it even better for wildlife. This meant removing concrete and brick old structures from the river, putting in bends where it was too straight, adding in variation in depth – so you have pools and shallow sections and everything inbetween and also changing the river banks so they were more natural. This project won an award and the best thing about it, is if you go there you can’t see it! The river looks totally natural.

One thing I would change is that I made a mistake with one person who lived on the river. I thought we asked me to do one thing (lower the bank opposite his house) and he meant to lower it on the side he lived! The mistake I made was to not write down what I discussed with him, so I never got him to confirm it. A good learning point for me when I deal with people who own land that I work on.
